Getting Married Abroad?

If you are planning to get married abroad – well firstly, congratulations!  The services of a Notary Public will often be required  on such occasions in order to satisfy the legal requirements of the overseas country with regard to the required documents.

The specific requirements of each country vary and you should take care to check the particular expectations of the place in which you hope to celebrate your marriage.  Sometimes the soon to be bride and groom receive clear instructions as to what is required of them  but on other occasions there is uncertainty and further clarification needs to be sought.   I am happy to assist clients in establishing what is required by the country in which they plan to marry and do not make any additional charges for communicating with your wedding planner or the local town hall in the area where you plan to marry where this is necessary.

It is important to start planning early especially where one or both parties has been married or in a civil partnership previously.  This is because some countries will require you to produce a Certificate of No Impediment or to have the court documents dissolving your marriage/civil partnership, translated into the language of the place where you hope to marry, or into English.

As a Notary Public I have close working relationships with other Notaries with suitable language skills to assist with translations.  I also have access to registered translation companies and to bilingual solicitors.  It is always important to keep costs in mind and whilst I can source translations for my clients, no fees are incurred unless the client approves the estimate and asks for the work to be carried out.
